G.M. Ford: Novels

Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca?

G.M. Ford

Walker & Co

1995

A Leo Waterman novel.

"Leo Waterman was born and bred in Seattle, Washington, and his father had contacts that ranged from the highest offices to the lowest dives. Those contacts are useful in Leo's pursuit of a profession as a private investigator. Of course, as a not-completely-rehabilitated hippie, Leo does go about things his own way. His best legmen (and women) are folks he knows from the kinds of bars the tourist board doesn't acknowledge, and they live wherever they can - including the streets. It makes sense: They're virtually invisible. With all that going for him, it's no wonder that Waterman receives the kind of call he can't refuse from aging mobster Tim Flood. Tim's granddaughter, Caroline, is involved in something and she won't talk about it. Beautiful, willful, and her grandfather's kin, she's been able to get around anyone he's sent after her. So, Leo gets his marching orders: Bring Caroline home. Safe. Unfortunately, the crowd she's running with has its own agenda ... and Caroline really does want to do something about the environment."

Cast in Stone

G.M. Ford

Walker & Co

1996

A Leo Waterman novel.

"Leo's boyhood hero, Henry 'Heck' Sundstrom was larger than life. Lately, however Heck's life has been spiraling out of control. First the honeymoon boating accident that killed Heck's son and new daughter-in-law, Allison. And now the big man himself was dying--struck down by delivery truck in a seedy section of Seattle. As he starts to investigate, Leo begins to wonder if Allison went down with the ship. And whether, with the aid of his, aging legmen, 'the Boys,' he can prove they're on the trail of a 'black widow' who may be less 'late' and more lethal than anyone ever suspected."

The Bum's Rush

G.M. Ford

Walker & Co

1997

A Leo Waterman novel.

"In a world where few can be trusted, loyalty and friendship are hard-won and tightly held. So when one of "The Boys" - the down-and-out, mostly-on-the-street people who often assist Seattle p.i. Leo Waterman in his investigations - goes missing, Leo is right there to lead the search. He couldn't have known where the hunt was going to take him, but even if he had, Waterman would never have backed down. The simple investigation turned quickly into a deadly tangle: Looking for Ralph led directly to saving a homeless woman from being beaten to death. Having saved her, Waterman felt responsible for her, even though she kept telling him to butt out. But he couldn't, especially not after finding the connection to the mysterious death of a local rock star. Tracing the ties between the two investigations is time consuming and the clock is ticking loudly."

Slow Burn

G.M. Ford

William Morrow

1998

A Leo Waterman novel.

"Anticipating disaster, Le Cuisine Internationale, a prestigious global restaurant convention, hires Leo as its own Special Security Officer. His relatively simple assignment is to monitor the movements of the society's bone of contention: two adversarial steakhouse competitors, whose "beef" has previously made for some nasty confrontations; and the food critic who's caught in between the warring factions. Cleaning up the Boys, Leo sends them off to shadow the entourages and report back to him at day's end. What could be easier! But even the simplest of plans can cascade into catastrophe. Leo finds himself served up as the prime suspect in a murder, gets thoroughly grilled by the police, and realizes that both his life and career are at stake."

The Last Ditch

G.M. Ford

William Morrow

1999

A Leo Waterman novel.

"P. I. Leo Waterman's late father was once one of the region's most powerful and colourful political characters. But just how seriously Waterman senior transgressed during his time on earth comes into question when one of 'the Boys' - Leo's 'residentially challenged' barfly allies - digs up a human skeleton in Dad's backyard. The remains that remain belong to 'Wild Bill' Waterman's staunchest foe - an ultra-conservative muckraking journalist who vanished mysteriously thirty years before. Leo has always struggled in his father's shadow - but he's convinced that his old man was much too savvy to have committed murder - let alone to have interred the victim in his own backyard. But in order to clear his father's damaged name, the dutiful son is going to have to start digging up a very dangerous past . . . and to do his damnedest not to get buried beneath it."

But when Rebecca, the love of his life, dumped him to marry someone else…that was a different story. Still, he took it like a man, eventually collecting his family money and slipping into semi- retirement—until the day an unwelcome visitor brings him the worst possible news. Rebecca has vanished and no one, not even her manipulative, overprotective mother, can find a trace of her. Together with his band of informers and sidekicks (in truth a rather motley crew of homeless drunks and reprobates), Leo wades back into the game, determined to save Rebecca once and for all."

The only thing that seems to connect the men is a controversial local church and its charismatic pastor. With help from Rebecca and surveillance expert Carl Cradduck, Leo begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together. While a pair of goons do their best to chase him off the case, Leo painstakingly retraces the victims’ final days, charting their unusual search for redemption—from a downtown homeless encampment to suburban McMansions to the shores of Salvation Lake.
